Buying a Kilt
|
| |
Right now there are more kilt makers at work than probably
ever before. The good news is, that means variety! The
bad news is, you'll want to use some care in selecting
your kilt maker.
I recommend doing some research -- start somewhere like
Xmarksthescot.com.
You can learn a LOT about the kilt makers by reading the
forum and seeing what others have to say.
If you'd like an insiders view, there are three modern
kilt companies that I highly recommend. Be sure to tell
them that "Pittsburgh Kilts sent me!" |

Freedom Kilts
Steve of Freedom Kilts comes the closest to doing what I used
to do--producing custom, one-at-at-a-time kilts with intense attention
to detail. His workmanship is fantanstic, his kilts look great,
and Steve is a wonderful guy. What else do you need to know? Freedom
kilts are available in a number of solid color and camouflage
fabrics.
Freedom Kilts is located in Vancouver, Canada, so keep that in
mind when you look at the prices. The US dollar cost will probably
be a bit lower.
If you're wondering why a Canadian kilt company is my first pick
for an "American Kilt", have no fear. Steve is a U.S.M.C.
veteran. He pees red, white, and blue (or so I've been told!)

USA Kilts
The owner of USA Kilts, Rocky, is another great guy. He is interested
in promoting kilts in general, and happily supports other kilt
makers.
USA Kilts works in classic Scottish tartans, but offers them
in modern Poly Viscose or cotton-blend fabrics (in addition to
traditional wool kilts.)
I hear very good things about the quality and workmanship of
USA kilts. This small company does custom work. Your kilt will
be made to order.

Utilikilts
It's not a small company, and you won't get custom work. But
Utilikilts still has a lot to recommend it:
- Utilikilts are a solid, good quality kilt, with a very large
and loyal following. To put it another way -- Ten thousand happy
customers can't be wrong!
- UK's are arguably THE most recognized, worn, and accepted
of all the modern kilts.
- The Utilikilt company is a "business
with a conscience", and worthy of your support.
- UK's were the inspiration for many a modern kilt wearer, including
me! They continue to be on the forefront of promting the wearing
of kilts.
